OLYMPIC TRIVIA
- Nadia Comaneci of Romania was the first Olympic gymnast to be awarded a “perfect 10,” the best score possible, at the 1976 Montreal Olympics.
- The oldest person to receive an Olympic medal was Norwegian-American Anders Haugen, who won the bronze medal for ski-jump at the age of 83, in 1974. He actually competed in the games in 1924, but did not win at that time because of a calculation error that was not discovered until 50 years later!
- Norway has won more gold medals at the Olympics than any other country.
Until 1908, the standard distance of the Olympic marathon was 26 miles (41.84 km). That year at the marathon in London, the royal family wanted a better view of the race. Olympic organizers added 385 extra yards (352 m) to the marathon distance so the race would finish in front of their seats. Ever since then, the official marathon distance has been 26 miles, 385 yards (42.19 km).
